Hey, I’m Hannah Witt
UESCA CERTIFIED RUNNING COACH AND EXPERIENCED COLLEGIATE LEVEL ATHLETE
Hello, my name is Hannah Witt. I grew up in Northeast Tennessee, in the aptly named Mountain City. My middle and high school years weren’t the typical trajectory of an endurance runner, as basketball, volleyball, and tennis were my key focus, along with marching band. What I soon realized, however, was that I exceled more in the conditioning rather than skill aspects of these activities.
We would have “march-offs” that involved the entire band starting in formation, then being given a series of commands, often to the timing of a quickening metronome beat pulsating deafeningly through loudspeakers along the field. My stamina often allowed me to outlast other band members. Though this was hardly distance running, I found I enjoyed the laps to warm-up before my other sports more than the sports themselves.
My lack of power and particular skill in tennis was often mitigated by my ability to cover the court in, to my opponents’ consternation, never-ending rallies. I showed up for a track and field interest meeting and realized that I finally found my niche. My coach even helped me to become the first cross-country competitor from our high school since we didn’t even have a team.

My Coaching
Though I wasn’t hugely successful as a high school runner, my college cross-country/track and field coach saw recruitment potential. I ran for King University in Bristol, Tennessee, where I continue to hold several school records at different distances. Being valedictorian at my high school, my desire to excel academically was frequently at odds with my desire to be the best athlete I could be.
I understand the struggle of balancing late-night studying with early morning practice, afternoon labs that seem to always fall on hard workout days, and nutritionally questionable cafeteria offerings that don’t always align with the best recovery. After university, I found that while working, it was easier to just run easy mileage. I worked at a parks and recreation, a running store, and then a small private college in a very tech-heavy, sedentary position, and thus witnessed, like someone watching another person’s life, my running speed evaporate.
What is often more discouraging than never having something and then deciding one day to try to go after it, is actually having that one thing, losing it, and then trying to go after it again. The thrill of being young and fit in college feels like it can last forever, and I’m eager to help that athlete tap into their potential while the time is ripe.
I also am eager to help the athlete who wants to recapture that feeling after getting a decade or more dosage of real-life.It is possible. I’m in that same boat, and let’s get the anchor out of the water already. Show me that horizon!
