Could you run 30 marathons in 30 days? Meet a man who thinks he can!
Reality TV star Spencer Matthews has his heart set on breaking a Guinness World Record.
Best known for his starring role on hit show Made in Chelsea, Matthews now aims to run 30 marathons across the desert in 30 days.
He is no novice to running, having previously completed three ultramarathons, but this might be his toughest challenge yet, covering a distance on sand equivalent to the entire length of the UK.
Aside from setting a new record, he is also aiming to raise £1 million in funds for Global’s Make Some Noise charity.
Finding inspiration for ultra training tips in other endurance athletes, Matthews has undergone rigorous training for the event, which must be completed within six hours each day, on sand. To meet his goals, he runs on average 30 kilometres a day, making use of the heat chamber facilities at South Bank University to acclimatise to 50-degree desert heat.
By training in these conditions for two hours a day, his heart rate can be protected from overheating. He will be packing six pairs of running shoes and two pairs of shorts to see him through the race.
Observing a strict balanced diet of 8,000 calories and supplements on training days, Matthews has also had to be mentally strong, particularly when his training was set back after his knee succumbed to Iliotibial band syndrome. Through grit and determination though, he is back on track and unfazed by adversity.
