Coveted ultra endurance event in California to return
If you’re up for an ultra-endurance challenge in California, this could be the event for you!
The Western States 100, also known as the Western States Endurance Run, is a legendary ultra marathon that forms part of the prestigious UTMB World Series.
Over the decades, the Western States 100 has grown to attract some of the world’s elite ultra runners, who regard completion of the course as a major honour.
Originally run in 1974 and now following a route barely changed since 1986, the race is traditionally held around the last weekend of June. Based in the Sierra Nevada mountain range, it starts in Olympic Valley and passes through rugged terrain, covering around 100.2 miles before finishing at Placer High School in the town of Auburn. It is considered one of the most challenging 100-milers in the world.
En route, it also features over 18,000 feet of ascent and 23,000 feet of descent, largely following the physical trails blazed by toiling gold and silver miners back in the 1800s. Two sections are notoriously taxing: the steep Devil’s Thumb ascent from the river valley and the Michigan Bluff, another steep climb offering spectacular views.
Along the course there are also 20 checkpoints offering medical assistance to runners who are exposed to a number of different dangerous elements, such as the American River on the 78-mile park that is crossed using a rope and rafts in high water.
