Essential kit for winter ultras
Are you training for an ultra this winter, and feeling a little… unprepared? Here is our indispensable guide to all the winter gear and marathon tips you’ll need.
The great majority of long-distance running events request that all participants are equipped with essential items to be allowed across the starting line. They typically won’t, however, give you inside tips to make your race less arduous and more comfortable.
The first thing you will need is suitable footwear for wet and cold conditions. Impermeable, knee-length socks are recommended, as well as gaiters to keep grit out. Wax coatings can also help waterproof footwear.
A jacket is essential, while over trousers with a zip at the bottom can be easily fitted without the need to remove shows. A ventilation zip can help with cooling off.
A reliable head torch is also vital to ensure maximum visibility in darker conditions, along with storm-proof matches and an easily accessible power pack and batteries stored in a warm place.
The right backpack too should be both strong and comfortable, with pockets able to contain and offer easy access to essential kit. Another tip is to add smaller, easily identifiable dry bags inside to protect contents from the elements. It is worth training with the backpack on to familiarise yourself with the bulk and weight.
It is best to prepare as early as possible before the big race, accumulating all the necessary gear over the year before. Each race is different, and what you need may depend on the course terrain, associated weather conditions and the country the race takes place in.
