Here is our guide to five of the more interesting running events taking place in 2025.

This selection of marathons and ultra events spans wildly contrasting climates – so, whatever the run, we have it covered.

For a quirky run, try the Côte Chalonnaise Wine Marathon in France. This two-day event offers four distances ranging from 8km to 42.4km and takes place at the end of March. It covers 17 villages, with wine from the vineyards of Burgundy handed out every five kilometres.

For something altogether more taxing, the Jungle Ultra at the start of June covers 230km across Manu National Park in Peru. Covering dense rainforest, the Jungle Ultra has been described as one of the hardest races on earth, as runners navigate trails and river crossings in high humidity.

The Dead Sea Marathon takes place in Ein Bokek, Israel at the lowest point on the planet - 420 metres below sea level. Runners are treated to spectacular scenery including desert landscapes, picturesque turquoise waters and ancient salt crystals en route.

There are also two Scandinavian events that are popular with cold climate runners. The PolarNight Marathon in January takes place in the Norwegian town of Tromsø. It features a full marathon and three shorter distances. While events are staged in the afternoon, they still take place in the darkness of winter.

Over the border in Sweden, the Ice Ultra covers 230km across Lapland in mid-February. Runners follow a course through frozen lakes and forests, often in temperatures as low as -40C.
