Global marathon takes place over seven continents
It is one of the most exclusive races in the world and arguably the most geographically diverse. Could you run seven marathons across seven continents in seven days?
For a fee of $52,000, which can be paid in three instalments, you would be eligible to not only enter the race, but also travel on chartered jets, with business class, inflight food and drink included from one event to the next. This also comes with trip cancellation and medical insurance cover.
This year’s Great World Race began in Wolf’s Fang in Antarctica on November 14 and ended in Miami on November 20. En route, the runners travelled to Cape Town in South Africa, Perth in Australia, Istanbul in Turkey and Cartagena in Colombia. Both the European and Asian legs took place in Istanbul, on either side of the continent, dividing Bosphorus Bridge.
The 2024 event featured a number of high-profile names from the world of running. Ultrarunner Ashley Paulson, twice a winner of the Badwater 135, took part, as did former middle distance turned marathon runner Jenny Simpson, along with peloton instructor Becs Gentry.
Professional endurance athlete David Kilgore also ran, following on from his 2023 triumph at the World Marathon Challenge, which is another ‘seven continents in seven days’ marathon series.
The winners were the runners with the fastest average time over the seven races. All finishers secured automatic access to the prestigious Global Marathon Club.
