History made at successful US marathon’s 47th year
There were emotional scenes at this year’s 47th Detroit Free Press Marathon, as a married couple won the respective men’s and women’s races for the first time.
The men's winner, Andy Bowman, finished in 2:17:47, over three minutes ahead of William Cadwell in 2:21:06 who was followed by Zacchaeus Widner in third place with a time of 2:21:22.
In the women's race, Bowman’s wife, Sydney Devore-Bowman, won in 2:42:46, beating off Chelsea Hall who clocked 2:45:55. She was followed by Casey Mulroy, who came in at 2:50:37.
The 47th Detroit marathon was the first edition to include an ‘elite’ group of athletes, but even in a broader field, the winners and several of the fastest finishers were local. The race director Aaron Velthoven said that having Michigan runners on the podium demonstrated the importance of Detroit’s running community.
In total, around 26,000 participants registered for the full weekend of events - an increase of 2,000 on 2023's figure, and close to the 2015 record of 27,833 entrants. Runners taking part in the full marathon event passed across the border into Canada along the Ambassador Bridge, before returning via the underwater Detroit-Windsor Tunnel. They passed by the Eastern Market and Dequindre Cut before ending up at Campus Martius Park.
