When taking part in marathons, competitors need to be equipped with the right running gear.

It is critically important runners have the right shoes, accessories and apparel. You must also, above all, feel comfortable during the race, on all terrain and in all meteorological conditions.

Here are some core clothing tips to include in your marathon training plan.

During training, you should be testing a checklist of different items to ensure they match your requirements and that there are no unpleasant surprises during the actual event. The most obvious starting place is the sports shoes you will run in, and you should get them checked by gait analysts to make sure they are the correct fit, preferably six weeks before the race so they can be broken in, but equally not too worn.

Your choice of running socks is fundamental too. These should be technical running socks to keep your feet fresh, comfortable and free of blisters. Your legs can be covered or-part covered by versatile shorts or running bottoms with pockets for gels and energy chews.

Getting the right temperature balance is key too, to make sure your muscles neither overheat nor get too cold. Frictional chafing can be avoided by wearing tight Lycra below a loose outer layer. Other key clothing includes running caps or head visors, running tops and compression gear designed to combat muscle damage.
