Very few people in the world can claim to have completed a marathon with a broken leg, but one of them is Olympic runner Rose Harvey from Worcestershire.

Harvey recently completed a gruelling 26-mile event in under three hours, and fought through the pain barrier and some challenging hills along the route, to complete the race in 2 hours 51 minutes in 24C heat.

She realised that something was amiss with her hip around two miles into the race, but was resolute in completing the course, having trained hard and come into the race in good form.

The injury was later revealed to be a stress fracture on her femur. During a tough race, which 11 other athletes did not finish at all, she said she was determined to finish, urged on by friends and family in the crowd and the prospect of seeing her fiancé at the end.

Harvey’s journey to elite marathon running was a slightly unusual one. Her previous career as a lawyer ended during the COVID lockdown and she took up running instead, initially as a commute, and eventually professionally. Her hip had first started tightening up three weeks before the race, and physios warned her that attempting the marathon would not do her training justice, but she was keen to run, through grit and mental steel.
