Competitive ultra marathon runners need to be fully equipped during a race. This is why hydration packs, also known as hydration or running vests, are an essential part of anyone’s kit.

Brands such as Solomon, Naked Sports Innovations, USWE, Orange Mud, Nathan, Ultimate Direction, UltrAspire, and CamelBak offer a wide range of tailored running vests.

Selecting the best running vest is no easy task when there are so many options to choose from. It should be comfortable, strategically padded, offer back ventilation and not pose any risk of chafing.
In terms of rehydration, determine whether you prefer a drinking hose or soft flask. A hydration vest should enable you to carry food, liquids, first aid, sun protection, emergency whistles, communication devices and much else.

On ultra marathons, often 50K or longer, it is not uncommon to spend hours in harsh weather conditions, from fierce heat to lashing rain. Preparation is therefore key, as anticipating 9,000 feet of elevation gain over 50 miles means runners should aim to store spare socks, moleskin and poles in a hydration pack.

Generally speaking, ultramarathons have aid stations located four to eight miles apart, and sometimes the first food-stocked one might not come until many miles into the course. This is why one of your ultra training tips is to carry all the gels and other foods you’ll need for the first half of the race. The running vest you opt for should therefore be able to accommodate everything you require.
