Space guardians complete a series of ultramarathons
The Space Force Guardians are used to dangerous assignments - but can they conquer an ultramarathon?
The team from Space Delta 15 normally work in space defence, but last month dedicated themselves to earthier challenges in Colorado Springs and Dallas.
Three of the team completed Colorado Springs’ 50K Bobcat Train Race Ultra, while a fourth runner finished the 50K Spartan Ultra, which took place in Dallas - a supreme test of the physical endurance and mental perseverance they have built up working in the Space Force.
Retired US Army veteran Jonathan Shark joined USSF Lt. Col. Daniel Coleman and USSF Master Sgt. Adam Swift in the Bobcat Trail Race. The race lasted around 8.5 hours and was described as an amazing feat of teamwork that tested their physical and mental limits.
Participating in his first 50K, Swift said that it had pushed him to reach new milestones. It was the second time Coleman had run this course, and he knocked just under an hour off his 2023 time, fulfilling his goal to improve on long endurance runs.
Their service companion USSF Lt. Col. Megan Belger faced a different challenge in Texas. She opted to run the Dallas Spartan Ultra, a 31-mile-long race that featured over 60 obstacles. Already familiar with functional fitness and CrossFit, she decided to participate in the race after completing an ultra-training schedule at a racing gym.
