If you’re an athlete running marathons in hot weather, your body will naturally sweat a lot. While this may sound obvious, how much do you really know about the science of sweat?

Thermoregulatory sweating causes loss of water and electrolytes during exercise, and the rate of sweat loss will vary considerably depending on each individual.

That perspiration is not just water, but also comprises essential electrolytes that include the minerals sodium and potassium.

Electrolytes maintain fluid levels and proper muscular contraction, regulating nerves and pH levels and keeping neurons working properly.

When electrolyte levels drop too low, it can have a negative impact on not only your performance, but also your physical health. This is why it is critical to replace depleted minerals, especially sodium.

While it isn’t difficult to find sodium and other electrolytes in regular food intake, when you’re sweating from intensive exercise you will need to ensure you consume extra amounts to make up for the shortfall.

This can be achieved with a range of electrolyte tablets, chews and powders on the market that are specifically aimed at endurance runners. Working to rapidly restore lost sweat and therefore boost running performance and reduce fatigue, these products are fast evolving and now come in an assortment of flavours.

In liquid form, runners are also advised to drink pedialytes, coconut water, sports drinks and fortified smoothies.
