The incredible story of the ‘Polish Forrest Gump’
Have you ever wanted to run across America? Well, an inspirational Polish ultramarathoner is doing that right now, crossing the entire country from coast to coast.
Tomasz Sobania began his mission on September 15 in New York’s Central Park and by the midpoint of his journey, had run the equivalent of 63 marathons or 1,616 miles. His ambition is to reach Los Angeles on February 9, by which time he would have spent 140 days on the road.
Sobania has described his marathon run as the 'journey of a lifetime' but not one without challenges.
He has thus far had to deal with various injuries to both his right leg and shoulder as well as numerous blisters, and has received painkilling injections to manage the pain. His resilience has won through, however, and he has stressed the importance of perseverance through endurance, irrespective of adverse physical pain or weather conditions.
To support his marathon recovery plan, Sobania has followed a strict regime involving up to 10 hours sleep daily, as well as a balanced diet, rotating hot and cold baths and the support of a physiotherapist. Unlike most runners, he has only 12 hours to get ready for the next stage.
In scenes reminiscent of the famous movie ‘Forrest Gump’, Sobania has found strong support from crowds willing him on, and sometimes even joining him. He is using the run to raise funds to support those with special needs, in conjunction with the Business Without Barriers foundation.
