The Loch Ness Marathon’s bid to become a global attraction
In the picturesque Scottish Highlands, an endurance event is drawing thousands of runners to Loch Ness each year.
The crowds are attracted by a race that is rapidly increasing the Inverness area’s presence on the global stage. According to the organisers, the Loch Ness Marathon and Festival of Running in 2023 hosted over 8,600 marathon runners from nearly 50 countries, who were cheered on by local crowds.
This year’s marathon is scheduled to take place on September 29 in Inverness and along the shores of a lake better known historically for the mysterious resident within its waters.
The excited organisers said that competitors have rushed to secure their spots in the marathon. They believe that the race will keep growing as global awareness increases of the natural autumnal beauty of the race course. Moreover, they believe the event will serve the area well as an ambassador for this part of Scotland.
In this year’s 22nd annual edition, the main event will follow the traditional route from the hilly higher ground on the south side of the lake down towards Dores before ending up in Inverness.
In addition to the main race, there will be other race distances including the Baxters River Ness 10K, the Baxters River Ness 5K and a Wee Nessie children’s competition. The Festival of Running commences the day before and features the Runners Café and Sports Expo.
