The New York Marathon 2024
The New York City Marathon is set to take place on November 3, with last year’s respective men and women’s champions Tamirat Tola and Hellen Obiri out to defend their titles.
Ethiopian superstar Tola showed his class at last year’s event, winning in 2:04:58, pulling ahead from the pack six miles from the finish. In so doing, he set a course record for the first time in 12 years. Hoping to seize his crown will be former New York winners Evans Chebet, Albert Korir and Geoffrey Kamworor.
In the women’s race last year, Obiri from Kenya won in 2:27:23, becoming the first woman in 34 years to win in both New York and Boston in a single calendar year. Her main challengers this time are her compatriot Sharon Lokedi, who won in 2022, and Ethiopia’s Tirunesh Dibaba.
Joining them will be around 50,000 other runners, including several celebrities such as Jennifer Connelly, Claire Holt and Vinny Guadagnino.
The New York City Marathon is one of the US’s elite running events, and one of the World Marathon Majors. It has been staged every year since 1970, with the exceptions of the races cancelled by Hurricane Sandy and COVID-19. It starts on Staten Island and finishes in Manhattan’s iconic Central Park, taking in Brooklyn, Queens and the Bronx en route. It thus passes many of the city’s most iconic landmarks, which drives its popularity with runners from all over the world.
