The Red Sea Marathon
A new marathon is to take place in Saudi Arabia.
The Saudi Arabian Athletic Federation (SAAF) made the announcement this week in Jeddah during a press conference.
It is anticipated the event will see around 10,000 runners participate in the race, which is scheduled for January 18, 2025, and will take place in Jeddah.
The marathon will be divided into four different distances. The main event will be the full marathon, which will cover 42.2 km and feature professional and amateur runners. The 21.1 km half marathon will cover a distance of 21.1 km, and will be pitched at average runner. A 10 km race will run by those aged 17 and above, and a four-kilometre race will be staged for beginners and children.
The SAAF have teamed up with Sports Hub to plan and organise this full marathon on an annual basis, offering significant prizes for the winners. It is predicted the race will attract people in huge numbers not just from Saudi Arabia, but from around the world.
While it might be the first ever marathon of its kind in Jeddah, its ambitions don’t stop there.
The organisers are hoping it will become one of the greatest marathons on earth, and that the city itself will benefit from improved sports resources. The route itself will follow the stunning Corniche coastal road, which complies with the required International Marathon Association standards.
