Most ultra distance events will stipulate an essential gear list to equip yourself with at the starting line.

They won’t, however, explain the expert tricks needed to prepare an athlete for adverse running conditions, which can only be gained through experience.

Running in cold to freezing temperatures poses a serious challenge, and endurance ultra marathon runners will need to be extra prepared.

A key consideration for these conditions is multi-terrain footwear designed with in-built gaiters to keep dirt and stones out. Feet need to be kept dry and protected to reduce the risk of cuts, sores and blisters. Additionally, knee-length impermeable socks reduce the likelihood and frequency of soaking or invasive grit. Sock liners worn with waterproof socks can be exchanged for a spare pair if water does get in.

Another good tip is a simple wax coating for non-waterproofed shoes. In a wet or snowy winter ultra, the need for breathability inevitably reduces, so applying a wax coating to dry insulate your upper shoe is a reliable way to keep your feet as dry as possible. Recommended winter accessories include a good head torch for visibility, waterproof over trousers, an ultra marathon backpack and a miniature stove, along with storm-proof matches or a lighter.

You should acquire and prepare this kit over the year and familiarise yourself with each element long in advance, particularly with items unique to a specific event.
