What can you learn from running a marathon?
The 53rd edition of the Space Coast Marathon took place in Cocoa, Florida this month. It is the oldest long-distance footrace in the Sunshine State.
One participant, 54-year-old Maria Bellaby, is ordinarily Executive Editor at Florida Today but on this occasion, she was just one of thousands of runners. Ahead of the race, she trained for 16 weeks, running over 300 miles. Upon completing the 26.2-miler, she offered advice to other runners considering taking part.
Be proud of your achievements
Firstly, she said running that distance is no mean feat. You should feel immense pride at your achievements, and don’t beat yourself up for not meeting a certain target, but instead strive to beat it next time.
Have a support buddy or group
It helps to run with other people, both in training and on race day. It boosts motivation and morale when the going gets tough. Having a support network is important too, and the lift from people cheering you on can help you conquer each mile.
Your body is amazing
Respect and celebrate your amazing body. Running is as much about testing and challenging yourself and identifying your limits. Anyone can run a marathon, and the Space Coast included people of all ages – even those in their eighties.
There are no shortcuts. Marathons are hard work. It is vital to put in the time, the miles, the nutrition and appropriate strength training. Once you cross the line, you’ll realise it was all worthwhile.
