Winter is a great time to go out running – so don’t let the cold put you off. Here is our guide to ensuring you are appropriately dressed for winter runs.

While the ideal outside running temperature is estimated at around 45 degrees Fahrenheit, these tips will help you maintain a regular routine in colder weather too.

Appropriate clothing

Ensuring you have the right clothing and footwear is fundamental. It’s a good idea to wear layers of technical fabrics equipped with zips in the neck and underarm areas to enable ventilation as your body gets warmer.

Patagonia make a range of products designed for cold conditions, such as the windbreaking Houdini Jacket, the hybrid Airshed Pro Pullover hybrid jacket or the winter running Nano-Air Hoody.

For dry clothing, Smartwool have developed a reputation for offering good quality inner layers, such as the Run Cold Weather Targeted Cushion Crew Socks, Intraknit Racerback Bra and Classic All-Season Merino Base Layer.

For mid-layer shirts, try the Janji Rover Merino Hoodie - and if you need tights, the Endless Run range and Gorewear R3 offer full thermal insulation.

Running accessories

For other accessories, many runners opt for gloves such as the Trailheads Convertible Zip Mitts or Ultimate Direction Ultra Flip Glove, beanies by Sauce Swift Toque or a headband by Buff Dryflx. You might also consider the Petzl Iko Core headlamp, Smith Motive sunglasses or a Salamon Adv Skin 12 Hydration Pack, to keep you topped up with fluids.

In terms of footwear, the Salomon Speedcross 6 and the Salomon Speedcross 6 Gore-Tex offer all-terrain waterproof winter running shoes.
