A unique ultra running event takes place every year in late October in the Arizona desert. The Javelina Jundred features 100-mile and 100k races that take place on a single-track looped course within the McDowell Mountain Regional Park - a tough and sometimes rocky landscape in which runners push through 1,580 feet of altitude gain per 20-mile loop.

The 100-mile runners are given 30 hours to complete five loops, while the 100k runners need to complete three loops over the same period.

The event is known as one of the most fun on the ultra-circuit, with a range of camping facilities and a “Jackass Night Trail”, which is a special night race in the dark with a party vibe. Participants and organisers alike are often seen partaking in fancy dress.

This does not detract from the serious and highly competitive nature of the Javelina, with some of the world’s most elite athletes drawn to the event. The top two finishers from the respective men’s and women’s races earn a “Golden Ticket” to take part in the 2025 Western States 100 Endurance Run.

This year, David Roche won the men’s event in 12:45:31 - the third fastest time ever, and just under two minutes shy of the course record. He managed to fend off challenger Jeff Mogavero, who came in second in 12:54:31.

In the women’s race, Riley Brady won in 14:19:01, the second-fastest time ever, ahead of Hannah Allgood, who clocked in at 14:38:30.
