A man from Wiltshire recently completed a mammoth 2,000 mile run across England, in which he raised more than £25,000 for charity.

Frank Wainwright crossed the finish line after a tour of the country that covered 1,971 miles in 62 days, along with a total elevation gain of 129,528 feet. This is the equivalent of a climber ascending Mount Everest four-and-a-half times.

His herculean endeavours took him through eight pairs of running shoes, three tubs of petroleum jelly and over 300 energy bars. His run ended at the Neeld Hall in Chippenham, at an event he himself devised for local runners, called the Bowcock Marathon. This final challenging course took in a number of scenic landmarks, such as Lacock Abbey and Bowood House.

Starting in Newcastle, Wainwright worked around the country clockwise, passing through each cathedral city. It also featured six national parks and five national trails, encompassing all sorts of elements and terrain. Wherever he went, he drew inspiration from the local area, completing Cambridge’s celebrated ‘Chariots of Fire’ run.

The purpose of the ultramarathon was to raise funds for charities such as the Brathay Trust, to help youngsters improve their lives and get suitable mentoring. The aim is to encourage the next generation to embrace urban life and outdoor wellbeing.

Wainwright said that while the run had been difficult at times, it was the experience of a lifetime. He completed his first ultramarathon in 2018, and has since completed over 100 different events.
