Women’s only marathon in Georgia, US
Interested in running a ‘female only’ race? Then the Every Woman’s Marathon in Savannah, Georgia might be the event for you.
Marketed as a uniquely accessible and empowering race for women of all abilities, Every Woman has attracted more than 7,000 registrants this year.
A large part of the appeal lies in its pitch as a safe, non-judgemental environment where women don’t feel intimidated and have access to feminine products and bathrooms.
This year, more than 40% of participants were first timers in a competition without an elite field. As such, individual goals are strictly personal bests, with no pressure on timings.
Despite the flat course, aid stations and benign Georgia weather, the 26.2 mile race is still a huge challenge. There are a number of bumps that may tax even seasoned runners; and, while this race has already demonstrated its popularity, there are other measures the running world can take to make races less daunting and more inclusive.
These include the provision of marathon training plans and online support systems in the build up to the race, and providing greater access to lactation stations and sanitary products along the course.
For many runners, the main draw of the Every Woman Marathon is the sense of community and camaraderie with other women, which can be empowering. Sometimes, it also means inspiring other women to also take up marathon running.
